Nizar N This movie represents all that Hollywood is, and was a few decades back. Polished, well-directed, well-acted out but with a twist of clichés and a sprinkle of racism and sexism. On the one hand, the viewer is treated to some beautiful scenes and shots, in addition to the great performances (from everyone) and chemistry between Gary Cooper and Paulette Goddard, whose appearance is vivacious. The length of the movie does not pose as big a problem as is generally regarded. On the other hand, the plot can be predictable and it is known from the very beginning that the "good guys" have to eventually win, and above all the natives are portrayed as nothing but a bunch of blood-thirsty barbarians, which could be overlooked (given the plot) hadn't the settlers been portrayed in contrast as innocents who demand nothing but peace, even though they're the colonizers! The sexist remarks and the slavery can be considered ordinary and might offer a realistic portrayal of the 18th century, but what is not ordinary is showing one side as humane and trying to draw contempt towards it (like making a little boy scream "mama") while portraying the other in a way that would attract absolutely no sympathy. Of course, Unconquered is not the only movie to force the viewer to take a side, but that is not the problem per se. In all cases, it's still an enjoyable movie. Very disappointed. With charismatic stars like Cooper and Goddard, I as expecting a much better movie. The film was largely poorly acted, and the script was even worse. While the landscape was beautiful, the camerawork was unimaginative and dull. The Indians were just terrible, not even portrayed like real people. I'm surprised this movie was rated so highly. This is probably the worst movie of 1947 I've seen.
