Ziemlich genau zwölf Jahre ist es her, dass The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero in Japan auf den Markt kam – damals für Sonys Handhelds PSP und PlayStation Vita. Jetzt erscheint das JRPG als Remaster mit einigen Verbesserungen im Gepäck endlich auch in anderen Teilen der Welt. Aber wie schlägt sich der Ableger im Vergleich zu anderen Spielen der Serie, und ist es empfehlenswert mit Trails from Zero in das Franchise einzusteigen? Diese Fragen wollen wir in dieser Spielvorstellung für euch klären.

Die The Legend of Heroes-Reihe reicht zurück bis in die 80er Jahre

Wenn ihr mit den The Legend of Heroes-Spielen bisher keine Berührungspunkte hattet, hier ein wenig Kontext: Der erste Titel erschien bereits 1989, allerdings ist das Franchise in drei Unterserien eingeteilt. Die Trails-Reihe begann erst 2004 mit The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. Nach zwei weiteren Trails in the Sky-Teilen kam dann Trails from Zero, gefolgt von Trails to Azure, die zusammen eine Geschichte erzählen. Ihr kennt die Reihe vielleicht von der Trails of Cold Steel-Tetralogie, die bereits komplett als Remaster für die Switch erhältlich ist, tatsächlich aber nach Trails from Zero spielt.

Darum kämpft Trails from Zero in diesem Jahr um den RPG-Thron

Genug Geschichte, kommen wir konkret zu Trails from Zero. Für 39,99 Euro bekommt ihr ein Remaster mit einer spannenden Kampagne, die euch circa 40 Stunden beschäftigen wird. Ihr übernehmt die Kontrolle über die Spezialeinheit SSS (Special Support Section), die diversen Geheimnissen auf den Grund geht und für Ordnung sorgen soll. Eure Einheit besteht aus lediglich vier Mitgliedern – das sind relativ wenige spielbare Charaktere für das Genre, dafür sind alle sympathisch und bringen einzigartige Fähigkeiten mit in die Kämpfe.

Gekämpft wird auf Feldern, achtet also stets auf eure Platzierung auf dem Schlachtfeld.

So spielt sich Trails from Zero: Das Spiel ist etwas simpler aufgebaut als die Trails of Cold Steel-Titel – das gilt sowohl für die deutlich kleinere Spielwelt als auch für das Kampfsystem. Genau dieser Aspekt könnte Trails from Zero aber zum perfekten Einstieg in die umfangreiche Serie machen, zumindest wenn ihr keinen Zugriff auf den Sky-Arc habt. Zudem gibt es einige praktische Quality-of-Life Upgrades wie eine Beschleunigungs-Option für das Gameplay.

Das Kampfsystem: Trails from Zero ist ein klassisches JRPG mit rundenbasierten Kämpfen, hat allerdings eine Taktik-Komponente, denn ihr bewegt euch auf einem Raster aus Feldern. Zu den normalen Angriffen kommen Spezialmanöver, für die ihr zuvor jedoch Punkte aufbauen müsst. Diese haben häufig einen AoE und können so mehrere Gegner gleichzeitig treffen. Wenn ihr eure Spezialanzeige komplett aufladet, könnt ihr sogar einen verheerenden Ultimate-Move ausführen.

Das sagen die Kritiken: Die ersten Testwertungen für The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero sind da, und das JRPG kann in den meisten Reviews überzeugen. Bei Opencritic steht das Spiel bei 82 von 100 Punkten, und bei Metacritic kommt die Switch-Version sogar auf einen Wert von 84.

Wer auf Rollenspiele der alten Schule steht, und nicht an die 100 Stunden investieren möchte, wird mit Trails from Zero kaum etwas falsch machen – egal, ob ihr bereits Bekanntschaft mit der Serie gemacht habt oder nicht.
