Born in Rhea County, she was the daughter of the late James Gaither Ella Jones Mathis. Martha was retired from Tech Information Center in Oak Ridge where she worked as a secretary.

She was a member of the Kingston Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by: her husband, William Paul Mathis; and her brothers, Frank and Marlin Wright. "DICK" JR. age 73, RICHARD H. formerly of noxville, died Sunday, August 6, 2006, at JacksonMadison County General Hospital. Dick was born on April 24, 1933, in Miami, FL, and was the son of the late Richard H. Meschendorf and the late Hettie Hale Meschendorf Lewis.

He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Gaines A. "Cricket" Lewis. He moved to Knoxville, TN and was a graduate of Castle Heights Military Academy, Lebanon, TN. He attended the University of Tennessee, graduating from CarsonNewman College, Jefferson City, TN. He served in the U.S.

Air Force on active duty in Korea in 1952-1953, and was in the Air Force reserve at Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Air Base. Dick was a prominent businessman in Knoxville, prior to his retirement to Brownsville, TN in 1998. He was manager with HallBrown Men's Clothiers for many years at its Gay Street and West Town Mall locations; and was a manager with E.B. Copeland Company before joining Home Federal Savings Loan Association as Marketing Director in the mid-1970's. In 1985, he joined Fidelity Federal as East Tennessee President, and continued his banking career with Union Planters Bank as Senior Vice President when it merged with Fidelity Federal.

In 1995, Dick retired from banking and joined the Greater Knoxville Chamber of Commerce as Vice President of Governmental Affairs. An active volunteer in both the Brownsville and Knoxville communities, he served as Chairman of the Board for East Tennessee Children's Hospital and as a board member for 24 years; Chairman of the Trustees for WSJKPublic Television in Knoxville; Chairman of the Better Business Bureau, Senior Citizens Home Assistance Service, and served on the boards and in leadership capacities for many social service, religious, and community organizations. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Upon retirement in Brownsville, Dick served as Chairman of Fi-nance for First United Methodist Church, Quartermaster and Adjutant for the V.F.W. Post, and was a member of the Ed Worsham Masonic Lodge An avid golfer and bridge player, he enjoyed many leisure hours with his new-found friends in West Tennessee.

Dick was a member of First United Methodist Church, Brownsville, where he served as Chair of the Finance Committee; and was also active at Church Street United Methodist Church while living in Knoxville. He is survived by: his wife, Jo Matherne Meschendorf; two sons, Richard H. Meschendorf, Ill and his wife Joy, Maryville, TN; James K. Meschendorf and his wife Stacy, Knoxville; and a daughter, Martha M. Wilds and her husband Mike, Knoxville.

"Pop" is also survived by: four grandchildren, Jonathan Meschendorf, Matthew Meschendorf, and Helen and Grant Wilds; and leaves his first wife, June Cottrell Meschendorf and numerous cousins. Mildred went to be with the Lord and many of her loved ones Saturday, August 5, 2006 at UT Medical Center in Knoxville. She was a long-time member of Central Point Baptist Church. She sang in the Central Point Quartet for many years. She was a devoted wife, mother and a friend to everyone.

Her greatest joy in life was in helping others. She worked in social work for many years while employed with Douglas Cherokee Economic Authority and East Tennessee Human Resource Agency. She helped many people gain employment, further their education, and get assistance in many other ways. She was a civic and community leader and true volunteer. She held offices and served on numerous boards including: Grainger County Chamber of Commerce, Grainger Literacy Council, Vocational Advisory Board, Douglas Cherokee Economic Authority, ETHA, and American Legion Auxiliary.

She was a founding board member of Cherokee Health Systems. She was pleased to have helped to get clinics in Washburn and Blaine. She was involved in many other projects and received much recognition throughout the years. She was preceded in death by: her parents, Bruce and Mary Fortner; father and mother-in-law, B.F. and Laura Moore; husband, E.A.

Moore; daughter, Donna June Moore; son, Gary Moore; brothers, Claude Fortner, Robert Fortner and J.C. Fortner; sisters, Edith Mellon and Ruth Pratt; also her in-laws who were like brothers and sisters to her include: Mabel Irwin, Edith Moore, Hilda French, Rex Moore, Harold Moore, Nina Murphy, Sybil Bristol, Jean Winstead; and spouses. Sarah Beth was one of fourteen children, twelve of whom earned a college degree during the depression years. She is survived by three brothers, Dr. Cooper Stanford and wife, Dr. Teeny Stanford of Memphis, TN, Dr. Ed Stanford and wife, Fern of Little Rock, Arkansas and Dan Stanford and wife, Violet, both retired teachers, of Linden, Texas; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was blessed with family. Sarah Beth moved to Knoxville in the 1960's and married Charles Sumner Simms, who preceded her in death in 1964. She has one step grandchild, Charles Sumner Simms Ill and wife, Carol S. Simms; four step greatgrandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren from this marriage. Sarah Beth was known as "Granny Simms" to her Tennessee family and "Aunt Beth" to her Texas family, and she was so loved by both families.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Knoxville for 53 years, and a Red Cross Volunteer for over 50 years, actively serving her country during World War 11. She supported many organizations during her life time and traveled, having visited many foreign countries, as well as most of the United States. She loved to tell others about her traveling experiences. She was patriotic and politically active most of her life; loved the outdoors and her favorite pastime was hiking in the Smoky Mountains. She was an avid birdwatcher and she loved wildlife.

She taught swimming lessons at the YWCA for many years and loved the water. Sarah Beth spent her last years at the home of her step-grandson, and her favorite pastime there was watching the boats go by on Douglas Lake. Granny Simms always had a smile on her face, love in her heart, and a good word for everyone. She will be missed by all that knew her. Granny's body will be buried in Linden, Texas at the Linden Cemetery, but her soul is safe in the arms of Jesus.

He also was quartermaster and adjutant for the VFW Post and he was a member of the Ed Worsham Masonic Lodge No. 505. Survivors include his wife Jo Matherne Meschendorf; two sons, Richard H.

Meschendorf III and his wife Joy, of Maryville, and James K. Meschendorf and his wife Stacy, of Knoxville; and a daughter Martha M. Wilds and her husband Mike, of Knoxville. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Knoxville at Church Street United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Church Street United Methodist between noon and 1:45 p.m. Thursday immediately before the service.
