Google has unveiled a new feature that lets you create images from text prompts using its Search Generative Experience (SGE) tool. The feature, which is available to users who are part of Google’s Search Labs program, uses the Imagen family of AI models to generate images based on your query.

The feature is similar to Microsoft’s Bing Image Creator, which uses OpenAI’s Dall-E 3 model to create images from text prompts. Bing Image Creator was launched in March and has been popular among users who want to make their own custom images.

According to Google, SGE has several safeguards to prevent the generation of harmful or inappropriate images. For example, the tool will not generate images that violate the company’s prohibited use policy for generative AI, or images that depict photorealistic faces or notable individuals. Google also says that every image generated by SGE will have metadata labelling and embedded watermarking to indicate that it was created by AI. Additionally, the tool is only available to users who are 18 or older.

The search engine giant also announced that SGE can now generate written drafts from text prompts to help you get a quick start on your writing project.

SGE was launched in May as a way to enhance Google’s search results with more interactive and engaging content. Since then, Google has added more features such as video and better links.

As mentioned above, Google’s AI image generator capabilities haven’t been rolled out widely. In fact, at the moment, they are only available in the US. But you can still sign up for Google Labs — a program for people to experiment with early-stage Google Search experiences — and gain access to the feature when it becomes available. Here’s how you can do so:

1. On an Android phone, open the Google app and make sure you’re logged in with your Google Account.
2. Tap the Labs icon on the top left corner. If you don’t see it, don’t worry. It’s not available for everyone yet.
3. You might have to join the waitlist to access Labs. If so, click Join Waitlist and wait for an email to let you know when you’re in.
4. Once you’re in, look for the Search Generative Experience and turn it on.

Once SGE has been toggled on, you can begin experimenting with various prompts directly on Google Search. Actionable prompts that ask Google to draw something will trigger the image generator. For instance, “draw an image of a cat and dog walking hand-in-hand into the sunset.”

If SGE registers that prompt, you should see four different images based on it. Tapping on any of these images will let you edit your prompt further in case you want something more specific.

Alternatively, SGE will also prompt you to create AI-generated images in Google Images sometimes when you search for inspiration using queries like “minimalist Halloween table settings” or “spooky dog house ideas.”

Google is yet to roll out image generation capabilities in India but you can still try SGE for AI-generated search results at the top of your search results.
