There was some question as to the casting of Gary Cooper, since he was 50 and Grace Kelly, playing his wife, was only 21, despite this being fairly commonplace for the period in which this film was set.

His brother, Arthur, was six years his senior. Cooper's father came from Houghton Regis, England and became a prominent lawyer, rancher, and Montana Supreme Court justice. His mother hailed from Gillingham, England, and married Charles in Montana.

In May 1974, after his family relocated to New York, Cooper's remains were exhumed and reburied in Sacred Hearts Cemetery in Southampton, New York.
