Checking and Replacing Fuses

Fuses and circuit breakers protect your vehicle’s electrical system from overloading. If electrical parts in your vehicle are not working, the system may have been overloaded and blown a fuse or tripped a circuit breaker. Before you replace or repair any electrical parts, check the appropriate fuses or circuit breakers.

To check a fuse, look at the silver-colored band inside the fuse. If the band is broken or melted, replace the fuse.

Notice

  • Before replacing fuses check that the key has been removed from the ignition and that all the services are switched off and/or disengaged.
  • Always disconnect the battery before servicing high current fuses.
  • Always replace a fuse with one that has the specified amperage rating. Using a fuse with a higher amperage rating can cause severe wire damage and could start a fire.
  • Never replace a broken fuse with anything other than a new fuse. Use always an intact fuse of the same color.
  • If a fuse blows again contact a qualified service center.

FAQs

What is fuse 27 Ford F 150? ›

I found more info on this. Fuse #27 runs the fuel pump.

Where is the blower motor relay on a 1997 Ford f150? ›

The blower relay is located in the blower/flasher relay block. It is under the dash, drivers side to the right and above the gas pedal.

What are the main fuses in fuse box? ›

Your fuse box will have two sets of fuses. At the bottom will be 15-amp and 20-amp screw-in fuses with glass faces that are exposed and visible. These fuses will service branch light circuits and outlet circuits. At the top will be 30-amp or 40-amp cartridge main fuses for ovens, laundry rooms, or stoves.

How do you know which fuse is blown? ›

The glass tube forms a physical guard for the fuse, so that when it blows the molten metal does not cause damage or injury. A glass tube allows you to see when the fuse has blown: there will be a gap in the wire or a metallic smear on the inside of the glass.

What does F mean on a fuse? ›

Alternatively, “F” stands for “Fast” or “fast acting fuses” with the “FF” rating for ultra-rapid fuses such as the one shown here. The ultra-rapid fuses operate at higher temperatures so are ideal to provide circuit protection to semiconductor devices.

What does ECM fuse stand for? ›

ECM stands for Engine Control Module, and ECU is short for Engine Control Unit. These two acronyms represent the same component and are used interchangeably.

What is an F type fuse? ›

Fast Acting Fuses: these are a more general-purpose fuse typically used with cabling and sturdier components. They are also known as Fast Blow or F-Type fuses. Slow Acting fuses include a delay mechanism that allows short, lower power electrical surges to pass through the circuit without the fuse blowing.

What are the symptoms of a bad blower motor relay? ›

Inconsistent or Intermittent Operation: The blower motor may operate inconsistently or intermittently when the relay is failing. You may notice that the airflow is not consistent, with the blower motor turning on and off unexpectedly or not functioning at all.

How do I know if my blower motor fuse is bad? ›

Use voltmeter or ohmmeter to check for a blown fuse. If you find one, replace it. Start car and see if the blower motor works. If fuse blows again, check for loose circuits.

How do I know if my blower control switch is bad? ›

Some of the signs of a failing A/C switch include settings that don't work, an A/C compressor that won't turn on, and a system that blows hot air. Aside from wear and tear, a blown fuse or a manufacturing defect may cause an A/C switch to malfunction.

What does the ACC fuse do? ›

The ACC position provides power to accessories only when the engine is started, so it's essential to turn off the power and remove the key before testing. Take the red wire and touch it to an empty slot.

What is kit kat fuse? ›

Definition. Kit Kat Fuse is a semi-enclosed fuse, which is also considered a rewireable fuse. This fuse is mainly designed for domestic wiring and small scale usage. There are two parts in kit kat fuse – fuse wire and fuse base.

What is an HRC fuse? ›

Definition: HRC fuse (high rupturing capacity fuse) is one kind of fuse, where the fuse wire carries a short circuit current in a set period. If the fault occurs in the circuit then it blows off. The HRC fuse is made with glass otherwise some other kind of chemical compound.

Where are the interior fuses? ›

Usually, you will find two fuse boxes in the car. One is located under the hood and the other is found in the dashboard or near the steering wheel.

Where is my main fuse? ›

The first thing to do is find your main fuse box (these days called a consumer unit), which will be in the same place as your electricity meter. They're often in the main hallway of a house, in a purpose-built cupboard.
