How to write a good commentary sentence? ›

A commentary should relate the passage to the rest of the work (novel, collection of poems, etc.), but remain focused in the main on the details of the passage itself. Make sure that your commentary covers the whole passage.

The format of writing a commentary essay includes an introduction, body, and conclusion. Begin with an introduction that includes a hook, background information, and a thesis statement. The body should consist of several paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the analysis linked back to the thesis.

Examples of commentary in a Sentence

Even when giving commentary in the form of an opinion, avoid using subjective phrases like “I hope,” “I believe,” and “I think.” These are just throwaway phrases. They are redundant (you wrote the essay, so it is obvious you think, believe, or hope what is written), and they reduce your credibility.

Similarly, a commentary essay has two ends that secure the entire content. One is the introduction that diverges and helps the reader to get familiar with the idea. The other is a conclusion, which converges and wraps up your essay. Here you cannot state any new ideas.

You should formulate in one or two sentences the message the author tries to convey and his reasons for writing what he or she wrote. These reasons should of course be briefly related to the historical context. This synthetic approach constitutes the introduction of a text commentary.

The structure of a response paper is standard for academic writing: there should be an introduction in which you present your source text and your response, body paragraphs in which you support and explain your response, and a conclusion that wraps up your paper and leaves your reader with something to think about.

The reflective commentary is not an academic essay, so you don't need to use academic jargon. Use first person, because it's a personal reflection on your work. However, don't be too colloquial and chatty either – your tone needs to be moderate and considered. Don't say “I tried to do X but it was rubbish”.

Write in unified paragraphs. Include transitions between the sections of the argument. Focus on individual words, phrases, and lines from the text you study. Use quotations.

You are going to need at least two sentences of commentary for every detail sentence. A good rule of thumb is that your commentary should be twice as long as your details.
