Good morning!54 years ago, yesterday, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to step on the moon. Today, weโre in a race to return as Artemis II astronauts train in Texas, Russiaโs Lunar-25 lander prepares for launch, Indiaโs Chandrayaan-3 craft moves closer to the moon, and China unveils its timeline for its new lunar-capable spacecraft. But the news isnโt only about space and the moon, this week. ๐ Goldman Sachsโ has cut its probability of a U.S. recession; of course, the Leading Economic Index disagrees, suggesting a recession will begin shortly. ๐ค Tech giants are ramping up efforts to keep pace with OpenAI. ๐ Congressโ puts NASAโs Mars Sample Return fate in question. ๐โ๏ธ A U.S. soldier fled to North Korea. โฃ Security at nuclear sites, world wide, has gotten too lax. ๐ฟ Wagner Group head Prigozhin has seemingly surfaced in Belarus. ๐ฃ And Chinaโs rhetoric grows ever more bellicose towards the United States.Read about the most important stories related to the aerospace & defense industries and the impact on national security below. And have a great weekend. No spoilers on Oppenheimer though. After driving more than 1500 miles (round trip) to Detroit and home, Iโm slowly recovering from the REINDUSTRIALIZE summit. Designing America put on an incredible event pulling in more than 500 leaders from industry, VC firms, and government to discuss how we rebuild Americaโs industrial capacity to meet future threats and risks. Well done to the DA team and this supporting the conference! In the news, China and the Philippines, Israel and Hezbollah, North and South Korea all continue antagonizing each other. Poop-balloons are flying again. Russia and China continue to act suspiciously in space, as they seek advantages there in the event of a war. Boeingโs Starliner crew remains stuck in space, having needed to shelter-in-place with ISS crew as a satellite mysteriously broke up sending debris hurtling at the space station. And money continues to pour into the sector with some exceptionally large rounds (e.g., Anduril is raising $1.5Bn at a $12.5Bn valuation!).Dive in to these and other issues surrounding aerospace and defense technology.๐: https://lnkd.in/eEUemesv#defensetechnology #defense #dod #news #venturecapital

Yesterday was the Summer Solstice. On the upside, Summer is officially here and the Swedish holiday of Midsummer is this week. โ๏ธ On the downside, the days are only getting shorter from here on. ๐Speaking of summer, itโs going to be a hot one with a heat dome having settled over the United Statesโ northeast and starting to work its way south towards the capital. ๐ฅตThe weather isnโt the only thing heating up. Defense industry is so hot right now that companies are having trouble hiring fast enough to meet demand. M&A remains active in the aerospace and defense sector. Naval warfare has reached an all-time post-WWII high. Oldโand I mean ANCIENTโdefense tech is making a comeback in the Middle East. Yesterday, I visited the hallowed monuments of the National World War II Memorial.I was struck by the enduring lessons it offers for todayโs defense industrial base. The memorial not only honors the bravery of our service members but also highlights the critical role of the home front and industry in securing freedom globally.https://lnkd.in/ei4-mhCrMike, Kate, Vic, Julie, Kevin, Mason, Edward, Van, Liza, Ariel, Andrew, Aaron, Chris, Falon, Gregory, Shyam, Andrew, Kathryn, Josh, Alexis, Heather#reindustrialize #defense #industrialbase #history #DIB

What do the following have in common?๐๏ธ US Congress๐จ๐ฌ Merlin Labs ๐ฉ๏ธ Safran โ๏ธ๐ฅ Israeli Hostages๐ Boeingโs disastrous engineeringโฝ๏ธ and SoccerTheyโre all top news this week!Clearly, Iโm behind schedule today and thereโs a lot to dissect in the news. First, the House Appropriations Committee did its committee markup on the Defense Appropriations bill this week. Watch for a lot of interesting insights to come in the near future on that.Second, weโre continuing to see VC firms raising funds to focus on hard tech and defense tech. Hopefully, this will quickly translate into opening the spigot for startups, but that still remains mutedโalthough there were some defense or defense-adjacent investments announced this week. More movement in the M&A sphere with Merlin Labs acquiring EpiSci and Italy finally approving French firm Safranโs acquisition of Eurofighter component maker Microtecnica.Geopolitically, Israel rescued four hostages captures on 7 Oct, at the cost of several hundred Palestinian lives. The US has proposed a ceasefire plan, now endorsed by the UN Security Council, although Hamas has asked for some amendments. Russia is floating part of its navy in the western hemisphere near Cuba and China may be attempting to probe Taiwanese naval defenses. In space, Boeingโs Starliner craft is stranded with its return date pushed to 22 June, amid multiple leaks from the spacecraft, just the latest in what feels like dozens of major engineering mishaps from one of the largest aerospace and defense companies. How have shareholders NOT demanded the heads of the entire board, yet. Finally, the UEFA European Championship 2024 kicks off today at 3:00pm Eastern at Munichโs Allianz Arena, where Germany is heavily favored to beat Scotland.Dive in to these and other issues surrounding aerospace and defense technology.#defense #defensetechnology #venturecapital #technology #newshttps://lnkd.in/erMZDUMQ

A critical right to be certain, and yet it is an easy one to abuse. Yesterday, I was in our Nationโs capital with my family as protestors gathered outside the White House, petitioning our President over what they considered a grievanceโour countryโs support for Israelโs existence and monopoly on violence. But where do we draw the line on what we consider to be peaceable assembly? ๐Is attacking a Park Ranger peaceable? ๐๏ธIs damaging federal buildings and memorials peaceable (which will cost us all in tax money to repair and clean)? ๐ฃIs an outright call for armed insurrection peaceable? ๐งผIs verbally assaulting someone trying to clean those federal buildings peaceable?Of course not. ๐ โ๏ธWhile I may consider most of these protestors to be ignorant and misguided, I support their right to assemble and protest. But I absolutely condemn their crossing of the line from peaceable to destructive, violent, inflammatory, and dangerous activities. While I am sympathetic to the Palestinians, I absolutely condemn the insidious and immoral use of terrorism, which is never just and never justifiable. And I condemn my countrymenโs support and encouragement for such immoral and unethical violence. Like many, Iโve been concerned about our country for years. Let us remember that we can engage in civil discourse and continue to build a great, strong, prosperous country capable of moral leadership in this world. Let us join hands and remember that we have more in common with one another than we have differences. Let us continue to work to build an America, of which we can all be proud. 80 years ago, the greatest generation launched the largest amphibious invasion in history, storming the beaches of Normandy to liberate Europe from the grip of tyranny. โ๏ธToday, eight decades later, we face perhaps the greatest threats to liberal democracies since that time. The challenges are daunting, but the spirit of determination and unity that defined D-Day continues to shine brightly. As we reflect on the past, let us draw strength and inspiration to confront the present with the same courage and resolve. This week saw the following:Europe continues to increase its support to Ukraine, seeing it as a bulwark against the Axis of Autocracy, as the country fights for its survival against its Russian invaders. As a geopolitical counter, Russia is attempting to expand its presence in Africa and in the Western hemisphere, trying to create dilemma for the US and NATO.In the IndoPacific, China is attempting to recruit western military trainers, which would give the Peopleโs Liberation Army critical insights into how the West would respond to Chinese aggressions against Taiwan, the Philippines, or elsewhere. Australia is relaxing its recruiting guidelines, onboarding more noncitizens into its military, as it worries about growing Chinese bellicosity.More firms are continuing to enter the Defense Tech space with PE giant Cerberus opening a venture fund focused on hardware and defense and DC lobbying firm J.A. Greene & Co jumping in headfirst opening a $100M fund with Anzu Partners.Dive in to these and other issues surrounding aerospace and defense technology.๐: https://lnkd.in/epJyw22H#defense #defensetechnology #defenseinnovation #dod #geopolitics #venturecapital #greatpowercompetition
