A man's youthful indiscretions come back to haunt him in this droll drawing room comedy. Sir Robert Chiltern (Hugh Williams) is a fine and upstanding British gentleman who has distinguished himself in the political arena and is selflessly devoted to his wife (Diana Wynyard). However, it turns out that he wasn't always a paragon of virtue, early in his career working with the British cabinet, Chiltern sold some confidential information regarding the Suez Canal, and Mrs. Cheveley (Paulette Goddard) has made it clear to Chiltern that she knows what he did and is willing to tell others about it. She agrees to keep silent if he's willing to support a proposal currently being debated in Parliament that would put a phony canal through Argentina. A fearful Chiltern agrees, but his best friend Viscount Goring (Michael Wilding) objects, and he tries to persuade Mrs. Cheveley to rescind her blackmail threat, while explaining to Lady Chiltern how a good man could do something so wrong at some point in his life. The play centers around the marriage between Sir Robert Chiltern, a member of the House of Commons, and Lady Chiltern, his wife. Lady Chiltern believes that her husband is a paragon of morality and virtue until she finds out a scandalous secret about his past.
An effervescent comedy with a hit of bitters, a co*cktail our players know just how to mix. Deception and blackmail are just the beginning of this witty Wildean classic.
An Ideal Husband is a four-act play by Oscar Wilde that revolves around blackmail and political corruption, and touches on the themes of public and private honour.
Apparently, Mrs. Cheveley's dead mentor, Baron Arnheim, convinced the young Sir Robert many years ago to sell him a Cabinet secret, a secret that suggested he buy stocks in the Suez Canal three days before the British government announced its purchase.
Oscar Wilde's third comedy, An Ideal Husband premiered at the Haymarket on 3 January 1895, preceding his sensational trial, First edition, one of 1,000 copies printed, presented in the year of publication from Lady Lewis, the wife of Wilde's solicitor, to their mutual friend the actress Elizabeth Robins.
Like many a comedy before and after it, An Ideal Husband ends with marriage. The pleasant, friendly world that was overturned by (perpetually single) Mrs. Cheveley is restored – improved, actually – and two couples declare and renew vows.
An Ideal Husband fits the conventions of the Well-Made Play, which was a very conservative form of theatre that uses stock characters and which has four sections: Exposition. Complication. Crisis.
He's loving, honest, compassionate, and generous. Smart, dedicated, loyal, and hardworking. Handsome, charming, and the perfect gentleman. He's a family man.
Communication Skills: A good husband actively listens, communicates openly, and empathizes with his spouse's thoughts and feelings. Effective communication is key to resolving conflicts and maintaining a strong emotional connection. Respect: Respect for his wife's opinions, choices, and boundaries is essential.
Being a good husband involves showing love, respect, and active communication. It also means being supportive, trustworthy, and a caring partner. Prioritizing your relationship and personal growth are key elements.
