Abbreviation for Calle?

Postby gettingthere

So here in Southern California the Spanish language has an impact on street names. Many streets are actually names in Spanish.

The work in Spanish for Street is Calle. From the basemap import, many/most of the streets that use this name have it abbreviated as Cll.

I have been told by a native Spanish speaker that Cll is not a valid abbreviation for Calle and that there is no abbreviation. Anyone else have any input on this?

FYI - I am not sure how the TTS pronounces this abbreviated name...

When I was editing in Honduras, the streets all used "Calle." 'Avenida' is for 'avenue' but it was abbreviated 'ave' as well, if I am not mistaken.

Av. is also a valid abbreviation for Avenida.

Maybe I was mistaken and they used Av. Abbreviation for Calle? - Waze forum (3) It's been a while since I poked around down there.

Writing from the other side of the ocean, but here the most usual abbreviations are C/ for 'calle' and Avda. for 'avenida'.

I suppose the issue here is that the 'average' English speaker that is searching for, setting routes, driving on these streets in Southern California may not be familiar with Spanish and likely has no idea that C or Cll stands for Calle. Likely I will rename that that I come across with Calle - not too many characters.

Also, not sure that the TTS that is currently implemented in the United States will handle some of these Spanish abbreviations...

Thanks for the input!

USPS does not have it abbreviated. Here is one example. A couple of Calle's in this neighborhood. Yes, it's on the street signs as 'Calle'.

The USPS Street Suffixes at the link that you provided don't have any Spanish abbreviations. They are out of touch with reality. Abbreviation for Calle? - Waze forum (8)

Actually this brings to mind an email thread that I had with the map provider for TomTom (Teleatlas). I submitted a map error report when I was using TomTom (prior to using Waze, of course) regarding a street name.

The street name that was incorrect on their maps - 'Camino de la Plaza'. In English this would be literally translated to 'Street of the Plaza' or as an English speaker would call it - 'Plaza Street'.

TomTom insisted on abbreviating the street 'Camino de la Plz'. I told them that does not make sense as the street name is Plaza and that can't be abbreviated. They stated that they use the USPS addresses and abbreviations and that if I want it fixed I need to get the USPS to fix it first. Yeah right. They refused to change it.

Really, Camino is the word that should be abbreviated. 'Cmo de la Plaza'.

No wonder the USPS is losing billions and failing. They have not kept up with the times.

At least the City of San Diego realizes that it is appropriate to provide abbreviations for Spanish Street names:

They don't abbreviate Calle either.

I was thinking English-centric at first. So Calle looks like a prefix and not a suffix like most street types in English. So as a prefix, I think it makes sense to be spelled out.

I have noticed more Calle's than Avenidas in Southern California. So I can't say how it is on street signs in Southern California. In Tijuana Mexico, Avenida is abbreviated Av on the street signts.

I am not a Spanish expect, far from it. But Calle means street. But in Spanish the word Calle comes before the street name. Opposite of English.

Spanish from Spain and Spanish from Mexico (heavy influence in the Southwestern US) and other countries in Latin America varies somewhat. I have not seen Calle abbreviated on any street sign in Tijuana Mexico. I would lean towards following more closely the Mexican standards on these types of issues since Mexican Spanish is most prevalent in this area.

Someone who has can explain this better - go for it.
